As we all know, formic acid has two conformers: transformic acid and cis-formic acid, namely, (T)-formic acid and (C)-formic acid; both conformers are planer. (T)-Formic acid has the acidic hydrogen aligned toward the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group, while (C)-formic acid has the hydrogen atom away from it. And (T)-formic acid is more stable than (C)-formic acid by about 4.0 kcal/mol. Our calculation of this value is in excellent agreement with this experimental number with an energy difference between the two conformations of 4.0 kcal/mol at the B3LYP/6-311++g(2d,2p)//B3LYP/6-311++g(d,p) level of theory. This corresponds to a Boltzman population ratio of about 1000 to 1 in favor of the trans conformer at room temperature.
