We currently have about 40 researchers/teachers and about 30 doctoral students. Research in glacial geology and geomorphology has a strong position within the subdivision of Quaternary Sciences. Modern and ancient glaciers and ice sheets, their behaviour in time and space, and their vulnerability to changes in climate, as well as the interaction of the cryosphere with the global climate system, are examples of some current research fields in Quaternary Sciences. Research into the dynamics and processes of former ice sheets and their resulting sediments and landforms are therefore fundamental in this aspect. A PhD scholarship in Quaternary Sciences towards glacial geology at the Department of Geology, Lund University, is open for a highly motivated person who¡¯s interested in joining our research group on glacial processes, sediments, and landform systems. International research within glacial geology and geomorphology has focused significantly on glaciotectonic landforms and structures in recent decades in order to reconstruct subglacial and ice-marginal processes of past glacial systems. The project in question aims to unravel past glacier dynamics in the lower Borgarfjörður region, western Iceland, from detailed studies of glaciotectonic structures and landforms in the Melasveit-Leir¨¢rsveit district and the coastal cliffs of Melabakkar-Ásbakkar, S¨²lunes, and Skipanes. . This will be achieved with e.g. terrestrial LiDAR scanning and structural mapping of coastal cliffs, micromorphology, georadar profiling, and geomorphological mapping. The project will increase the current understanding of the glacier dynamics during the deglaciation of the Iceland ice sheet. The PhD student is expected to perform some teaching within the Geology programme at Lund University. Eligibility/Entry Requirements Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad. Special eligibility requirements comprise knowledge from first-cycle studies or the equivalent, but can also refer to special professional experience. Additionally, sufficient knowledge of the subject area is required for third-cycle studies. Students meeting special eligibility requirements are those who have- at least 60 higher education credits within the same subject area as the third-cycle studies, of which in-depth work of at least 30 higher education credits of relevance to the subject area- a Swedish medical degree or Swedish certification as a doctor. The applicants are expected to hold a university degree (preferably MSc. or equivalent) in natural sciences. A degree in Geology or Physical Geography is preferable, although candidates with other suitable backgrounds will be considered. Documented experience in field studies is an advantage. Experience of scientific publication in English is an asset. We are looking for a person with a Master degree (or equivalent) in Geology/Quaternary Geology/Structural Geology or Physical Geography at the time of employment. Good knowledge of glacial sedimentology and geomorphology is required; knowledge or experience of structural geology (glaciotectonics) and micromorphology is an asset, and GIS and Ground Penetrating Radar-applications are a further merit. The project will include extensive fieldwork. Thus documented experience/ability of geological field work is required, as is a driving license. Very good knowledge in spoken and written English is expected. The doctoral student is expected to be able to work both independently and within a working group, and must be able to spend longer periods of time in Edinburgh and Iceland. Basis of Assessment The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance. |
