| The solvent has a significant effect on the cmc of C14E4, with cmc¡¯s in pure EAN being much greater than those in EtAN or water; High solubility in EAN compared to water has been observed for other surfactants, and can be attributed to EAN¡¯s amphiphilic nanostructure; EAN¡¯s nonpolar domains solubilize the surfactant hydrocarbon tails. Hydrogen bonding between the ethylammonium cation and ethylene oxide units in the surfactant head group may also contribute to surfactant solubility, but neutron reflectivity and scattering and atomic force microscopy measurements have shown that ethylene oxide monomers are poorly solvated by EAN compared to water, so associations are expected to be weaker. EtAN has smaller apolar domains than EAN and is thus less able to solvate surfactant tail groups, decreasing surfactant solubility and resulting in cmc¡¯s in EtAN that are similar to those in water. |
