Ref. only:
The mother liquid and the filter cake of the paraquat were added into the oxidation reactor. After cooling down to ca. 15C while stirring, chlorine gas was slowly introduced by controling the flow rate to keep the reaction temperature at ca. 20-30C. During this process, the solid gradually disappeared, and the color of the reaction mixture gradully turned from purple brown into brown, and finally into wine red. After ca. 1 hr chlorine introduction, the pH of the reaction mixture reached to 2. Stop chlorine introduction and further stirring for 0.5 hr gave crude (raw) paraquat with the yield of ca. 43%
