Stimulated by major needs and challenges in science and society, our ambition is to foster a creative environment for academic research, teaching and outreach. We provide a competitive advantage by linking top-level international and interdisciplinary academic performance in the areas of material science, nanotechnology and energy research with world-leading industrial R&D&I projects. We address a wide array of experimental, computational, methodological and theoretical challenges, from fundamental physics research, through the development of new materials to direct industrial projects generating new inventions. We have a strong learning commitment on all levels from undergraduate to PhD studies where physics meet engineering. We are situated in a stimulating and creative environment with 200 physics teachers and researchers, 120 PhD students and 550 undergraduate students. Information about the division The Functional Oxides Group within the Division of Condensed Matter Physics (CMP) at the Department of Applied Physics of Chalmers University of Technology is searching for a PhD student in the area of Materials Physics. Our research focuses on the application of advanced spectroscopic techniques to address current, challenging, problems in the area of functional oxides. Job description For the present position, we are looking for a PhD student to investigate structure-dynamics relationships in functional oxides. A unifying theme is to investigate the nature of structural defects and dynamical excitations (local vibrational modes, phonons, and diffusional motions) on the atomic length-scale, and to correlate these elementary materials properties to the functional, macroscopic, properties of the materials. The primary tools to this end involve the use of neutron and synchrotron x-ray scattering (diffraction, absorption, inelastic and quasielastic methods, and reflectivity techniques) and light spectroscopy (Raman and infrared), often combined with theoretical modeling in collaboration with our research colleagues. A particular emphasis in this position is put on investigations of hydrogen dynamics in perovskite type oxides, of interest for a range of different energy technologies, and its correlation to different structural and chemical factors. This includes both classic proton conductors and hydride dynamics in novel oxyhydrides. The student will be based at the CMP division, which has about 30 members of 15 different nationalities, but will be part of a larger research program, in collaboration with other research groups at Chalmers and in Sweden, as well as with many international collaborators. In particular, we have a strong interaction with top scientists at the University of California Santa Barbara (US), University of Verona (Italy), NIMS (Japan), and with several researchers at neutron scattering facilities around the world. It implies that this exciting PhD program not only presents an excellent opportunity for the student to develop into a highly skilled physicist, trained in unique experimental techniques such as neutron and synchrotron x-ray scattering, and to work on a timely topic of high societal impact, but also to broaden his/her cultural horizons. The majority of the student's working time will be devoted to his/her own research, with the main objective to obtain a PhD degree at the end of the project. For this purpose, it is expected that the student will be able to develop and pursue his/her own scientific ideas, and communicate his/her results in a wide context, through the publication of scientific articles and oral presentations at international conferences, for example. In addition, the position will normally include 20% department work, mostly teaching duties. Since several of the experiments (neutron and x-ray experiments) will be performed abroad (for example, at the Institut Laue-Langevin [www.ill.eu] and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility [www.esrf.eu]) and the project is conducted in close collaboration with many international research groups, the student will travel on a regular basis. The employment is limited to a maximum of five years. Qualifications We are looking for outstanding candidates with a degree in physics or materials science. Candidates must have strong social skills, work ethic, and collaboration and communication (oral and written) skills. Candidates must also show great potential to drive projects independently. Application procedure The application should be marked with Ref 20130075 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below: Application: (Please name the uploaded document in ReachMee as: APPLICATION, family name, ref. number) - CV, - attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents, English language test, e.g. TOEFL score, - letters of recommendation from academic institutions and/or previous employers (optional), A letter of application detailing your specific qualifications for the position (named: QUALIFICATIONS, family name, ref. number) - maximum one A4 page Publications: (named: PUBLICATION, family name, ref. number) - relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis (or outline of a thesis under preparation). Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form. The files may be compressed (zipped). Application deadline: 2013-04-11 In order to improve the gender balance at the Department, we welcome in particular applications from female candidates. For questions, please contact: Asst. Prof. Maths Karlsson Dept. of Applied Physics, Chalmers Phone: +46 31 772 8038 Email: maths.karlsson@chalmers.se |
