thanks for posting your thoughts comparing the typical house structure in US and China. i come from a village in Hunan, south China. There, villagers tend to build  two-story or three-story houses with almost identical structures. Even the painting is very alike each other. I think there are two reasons behind. Firstly, villagers like to put themselves on a safe side due to cultural feature. In this case, they would prefer to follow others rather than making a difference. Secondly, most villages are often devoid of good architect. You might argue that many workers are quite smart. But they are usually lack of professional training thus with little qualification in architectural design. As a result, many houses DO NOT really have their design, not even to talk about designing styles.
In one word, we need better education system to produce talented architect to design and build more beautiful houses. This will only be achieved when we have stronger economical power.

I have been living in a warehouse before I was 12, and I have learned many many insects especially bugs during that time. I often saw mice, and sometimes small rats like new-born. Moths were common guests, a lot of friends living in the countryside liked to play with them, but I wasn't a fun. I was just afraid of those specs out of the wings of a moth would float to my eye. But silk moth is another case, you know it ! We raised them from silk worm. The funny insects in our favour would be the cricket, katydid, and grasshopper, the first 2 could sing beautiful insect songs and locust was fun to catch.

Now I am living in SH, I have seen a lot of houses like in the photographs in JinQiao, where a lot of foreigners live. Those houses are made of bricks and cements, it may not survive a earthquake, nowadays, people use concrets to build new appartments which is more steady in counter to earthquake and less polluted material.
