Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by the presence of prolonged airflow limitation. It is comprised of multiple factors and mainly associated with chronic inflammation in airway, lung parenchyma and blood vessels. Dipeptidyl peptidase IV are distributed in a variety of human tissues and involved in many different physiological processes. The alteration of the water-soluble dipeptidyl peptidase IV (sDPPIV) level in serum might be associated with a variety of diseases. It has been shown that sDPPIV concentration in serum is not related with age or smoking, thus it may be of significance in early serological diagnosis of COPD.
