19.11. 2012 | PhD Position (m/f)

The Institute for Coastal Research invites applications for a 3-year PhD position (m/f) starting in January 1st 2013 and ending not later than 30th June 2016, in the project “Long-term variability of coastal-upwelling systems”.
PhD Position (m/f) - code no. 2012/KS 13
This project is part of the Cluster of Excellence “Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction” (CliSAP), a collaboration between the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, the University of Hamburg, the German Weather Forecast Service, and the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology. The PhD position is located at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany.

The main objectives of the present project are the identification of the large-scale climate factors that drive the low-frequency variability of coastal up-welling in selected areas of the globe, and the estimation of their changes in a warming climate. The work involves the statistical analysis of observational data sets and of simulations conducted with global and regional climate models, and stand-alone ocean models, spanning a range of time scales from the past millennia to the next centuries. Targeted simulations with regional climate models to fill the gap in the spectrum of existing simulations are also envisaged.

Required qualifications are:

degree in meteorology/atmospheric physics, oceanography, physics, applied mathematics or in a related scientific field (e.g., geophysics or Earth system science)
ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
    strong motivation towards climate research
strong interest in statistics and data analysis
experience with Linux or Unix environments
knowledge of Fortran, R, Matlab, Mathematica or S-Plus will be considered an advantage

The successful candidate is expected to present his/her PhD dissertation at the University of Hamburg in the last stages of the project. You may contact Dr. Eduardo Zorita

We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.

19.11. 2012 | PhD Position (m/f)

The Institute for Coastal Research invites applications for a 3-year PhD position (m/f) starting in January 1st 2013 and ending not later than 30th April 2016, in the project “Sea-level variability and change in the North Sea and Baltic Sea”.
PhD Position (m/f) code no. 2012/KS 14

The main objectives of the present project are the analysis of the dynamics that modulates long-term sea-level variability in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and their interconnection. Both regional seas are exposed to the immediate influence by the North Atlantic, the overlying atmosphere and the surrounding land areas, and a remote influence from the polar land masses. Estimations of future sea-level rise in both seas have thus to take into account a variety of climate factors.

Required qualifications are:

degree in meteorology/atmospheric physics, oceanography, physics, applied mathematics or in a related scientific field (e.g., geophysics or Earth system science)
ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
