Workplace Organization & Layout

    Early detection of equipment problems requires a lean and well-organized workplace so that it is easy to see when things are not correct. Early warning signs, such a s minor fluid leaks, are indications of future failure and must be proactively addressed to minimize downtime and product impact. It must be clear to the observer that all workplace and equipment throughout the size are conspicuously clean, with necessary parts and equipment well organized and properly stored.
1.        The site’s 5S program addresses general workplace cleanliness and order, together with specific focus on equipment to facilitate early detection of deterioration in performance, condition and appearance.
        Having a structured program such as 5S is about much more than just good housekeeping. It is about changing the environment where abnormalities are easily identified. It has a direct effect on safety, cost, quality, delivery and OEE. Compliance audits are used to ensure that standard for cleanliness and order are maintained.
2.        Workplace and equipment cleaning schedules, detailing both task and frequency, are in use by all operators
        Operators should develop their own documented routines and should specify task requirements in terms of standards, requirements and equipment etc as well as task duration and frequency.
3.        All workplace and equipment throughout the site are clean and well-organized, with only necessary parts and materials kept on the shop floor in clearly defined and marked positions.
        Workplaces and equipment should be conspicuously clean and tidy, free of clutter, and well organized (based on site tour)
        Good visual management requires simple work places so that problems and difficulties are quickly apparent. This can be achieved by only holding items close to the workplace that will be needed on a frequent basis. All items that are required to be kept in the workplace should have marked and designated storage areas, such as shadow boards.
4.        Andon control is employed on all relevant equipment to alert production personnel to equipment problems.
        Andon is name given to a warning signal that reports important information requiring immediate attention. Typically Andon control in the form of lights or sound is used to signify that a line or process has stopped and requires operator intervention; they can either be triggered by the operator or automatically
5.        Work place layout specifically address equipment maintainability
        Full consideration has been given to ease of maintenance. Factors include location, identification and accessibility of inspection points, easy accessibility of frequently used tools, maintenance parts and materials and modular changes, where appropriate
        In addition, troubleshooting guides and critical operating and maintenance instructions must be easily accessible in the workplace
6.        All process and packaging materials are readily accessible to production operators
        Workplace must be designed so that travel time and delays to operators are minimized. Planning should ensure material is available when required and temporary storage locations should be at, or near ,the point of use.
