@fungixx @rchiuctw Dear Uncle Raymond, can I ask some questions? *^_^* : After so many years' experience including feeling happy, puzzled, sad, lost, willing, satisfied, and so on, what's the most important things for us do you think? what are we pursuing and happy for? Looks? money? business? love? warm? or acceptance? How should we live our life? I ever thought I was clear about these, but recently fell into be confusing again... Sometimes I only want to be simple and just want a simple life, but, but sometimes it seems incompatible with the values shared by the society. I would like to take this chance to thank fungixx for his good words, and although I am an old man at age 52, I have a heart of 25 instead. As I always mentioned, language is for communication and therefore good grammar, pronounciation, spellings are the basics, but furthermore, we need to know when to say what, a good English song will give us ideas about popular sentences, and a good English movie will give us ideas about what to say in certain circumstances. For example, we all knew to say goodbye when seperate, but in real life, people will choose to say have a good day if definitely he will not see you again within same day... I will try my best, with my limited knownledge and only so so English command, to help those will need, and hopefully we can benefit within this nice and joyful atmosphere created by English Cafe platform, a platform for all of us.  |

Welcome our Raymond. This morning i happened to know this news. i am very excited. i my eyes, we really need one expert to lead us. when it comes to learning english , i am weak in spoken english. Besides, sometimes when i communicate with foreign friends ,i can't choose appropriate experssion although i have passed many examinations related to english. Uncle, i am looking forward to your good articles (or "words",i don't know....  ) |

Shit, I will almost print my question, but other girl turned off the power by mistake. What a pity, now, again. It may be a silly question, because too many many people have asked it, but I wanna consult how to enhance the listening and oral English effectively. My level still stay the stage of "Dumb English" although the reading and writing aren't too bad. I wanna focus the attention to listen every word and grammar so that I always cant't catch and understand what it is. Aso, I feel nervous and don't have the encouragement and confidence to loose my tongue, when face the occasion of talking in English, specially talking with the foreigner. I don't know which topics to be suitable. Others suggest music, novels and movies all are useful for oral English, but these methods are useless for me. Maybe they aren't suitable for me or other things. Do you have any suggestion for me? Thank you firstly. |

When you said music and movies are not useful, I suspect that you need to change your mindset a little bit. English is not our mother tongue, and therefore from first lesson, we do a lot of translation in mind to memorize each word. For example, in the morning when we see people, naturally we would say Good Morning and somehow students they use a very funny method to memorize it, say 狗的抹脸. And from that onward, students are not learning a language, they just memorize it. To use the language, you should add Good Morning to your mind, and in the morning when you see the others, spell out Good morning no matter opponent is or is not a foreigner, spell it out loud, do not hesitate and make it real fast, this is to train your mind that Good morning is the right word to spell when meeting people in the morning. My experience to learn oral English is still songs, movies and foreigner chat and no other shortcuts, however, the song listening is two steps, first you listen while viewing the lyrics, and next when you are confident enough, listen without lyrics and of course at last, you sing along and try to adjust your tone to match with the singer. For movies, a similar practise is to view the movie with Chinese subtitles first to understand the content, secondly, view the same movie but with English subtitles, and lastly, view it without any subtitles, and more important, spell out the same as movie character said. I am not sure if the above can be helpful to you, but I suggested these to many people who think they are working. |
