The long-short shaft of the oval is always in the X, Y-directions, and the X, Y direction is exactly 1/4 wave plate of the fast-slow axis direction. Accordingly, the light emitted from the 1/4 wave plate is named as linearly polarized. Its direction of polarization and the y-axis angle is . Therefore, the analyzer from the quadrature position turned away  angle allows the output is minimal. This angle named as the extinction angle, can be detected by the analyer, and the birefringence gradient ΔR can be showed as follows:
