Thank you for your interest in our laboratory and the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. At UNC Chapel Hill, all students in biomedical Ph.D. programs are admitted through the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP). There are no direct admissions to specific laboratories or departments. During their first year, BBSP students take classes and perform research in three different laboratories. At the end of the year, students choose a lab for their Ph.D. studies and the specific Ph.D. program they wish to join. There are about 350 faculty members and 14 Ph.D. programs within BBSP. I expect that applications for admission in August 2013 will be due in early December 2012. For more information about BBSP, see their website All BBSP students receive the same financial support, which includes a stipend of $27,500 per year plus payment of tuition, fees, and health insurance.
