The structure, function, and composition of many of the complex carbohydrates found in nature have been described by analytical chemistry and the composition of biosynthetic machinery used to build them has been revealed by advances in genome sequencing. This has set the stage for the active manipulation of carbohydrate structure and intervention in the glycosylation process.
