Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment in Uppsala Legacy and emerging pollutants in boreal environments Legacy and emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are ubiquitous and can undergo atmospheric transport and deposition to cold environments including the boreal forest where snowfall efficiently scavenges pollutants from the atmosphere, resulting in their accumulation in snow, surface waters and sediment. Eventually, these pollutants may be transported from Swedish boreal catchments to the Baltic Sea, where there are on-going problems with elevated POP concentrations. Working with leading researchers at SLU and other Swedish universities, the successful candidate will evaluate fate and transport of legacy and emerging pollutants in the Swedish forest. Project components include: (i) Characterization of the role of snow in the cycling of POPs (including atmospheric deposition and snow melting), (ii) elucidation of their transport and cycling in catchment waters, and (iii) mass-balance modeling for atmospheric and catchment processes for POPs. Qualifications Applicants should hold an MSc in environmental chemistry, environmental science or equivalent. Strong skills in analytical chemistry and a good knowledge of statistical analysis is advantageous. Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is required. Knowledge of and interest in field experiments, scientific writing, modeling and working in an interdisciplinary environment are valuable merits. The position is full-time and will be granted for a period of four years, starting as soon as possible.
