The ambitious goal of this project is to explore the physical and physical-chemical grounds of imaging nanosized molecular aggregates in living animals non-invasively. Pursuing this goal has become realistic only recently, due to the breaking of the diffraction resolution barrier in fluorescence microscopy by stimulated emission depletion (STED). A formidable task ahead is to image individual synapses in the upper layer of a living mouse brain and the distribution of its proteins. The project is carried out together with neuroscientists both from within the department and from the Medical School of the University of Göttingen. Watching the molecules responsible for 'thinking' at work (with STED microscopy) would revolutionize the basic understanding of our primary organ and also pave the way to understanding many neurological disorders. We require a background in physics, or biophysics, and enthusiasm for science.
