what restrict or decided species's size

today,my daughter ask me why the tree is so high but the flowers are so low.i just told her it's the diffence of species,they have different genes.just like adult mouse is so little,however ,the baby elephant is so large. but the question is i really don't know why.i don't know what and how restrict or decide it.who can tell me ?please ,thancks! thanks everybody!may be she can't understand any answers,because shi is just half and three years old.but i want try my best to answer her's any questions.i hope she can found the world is so interesting ,curious and beautiful. hehe,may be one day she can realy find the causes.
