Introduction.—In 1960, Schiff showed that an ideal gyroscope in orbit around Earth would undergo two relativistic precessions with respect to a distant inertial frame: a geodetic drift in the orbit plane due to motion through the space-time curved by Earth’s mass and a frame-dragging due to Earth’s rotation. The geodetic term matches the curvature precession of the Earth-Moon system around the Sun given by de Sitter in 1916 . The Schiff frame dragging is related to the dragging of the orbit plane of a satellite around a rotating planet computed by Lense and Thirring in 1918 . Frame dragging has important implications for astrophysics; it has been invoked as a mechanism to drive relativistic jets emanating from galactic nuclei. |
