Young Wistar rats (age 11–17 days) were decapitated under ether anaesthesia; brains were rapidly removed, placed in oxygen-ated ice-cold artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF; composition inmM: NaCl 124; KCl 3.0; NaH2PO4 1.2; MgSO4 1.2; CaCl2 2.0; NaH-CO3 26; D -glucose 10, pH 7.3) and cut into 300 lm slices with a vibratome. One slice containing the hippocampus was then transferred to the recording chamber of a patch-clamp set-up, continually perfused with oxygenated ACSF and viewed under an infrared differential interference contrast microscope (Leica DMLFS).
