With the passage  of vertebrates from water on to  dry
   land, the  need of  a  substance  that  by  its  strong  reducing  properties  would
   diminish  the    aggressivity  of  atmospheric  oxygen  towards  pulmonary  tissue,
   became strongly enhanced, and the ability to produce vitamin C in the kidneys
   did in fact appear in amphibians.
