ReUseWaste PhD Fellowship: Field application and gas emissions
http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/index.cfm/jobs/jobDetails/33769019
Description
ESR 6.1: Field application and gas emissions of slurry treated by additives and mechanical separation.
Animal slurries may be subjected to physical, biological and chemical treatment, giving origin to effluents of different composition and characteristics. Treated effluents show different agronomic and environmental behaviour compared to raw slurry, Also, the addition of nitrification inhibitors to the slurry before its application to soil modifies the usual progress of N cycling processes. These techniques when applied at farm level may contribute for better efficiency of slurry use and management and, therefore, increase the sustainability of animal production but final result depends on several variables. However, depending on the treatments (these can be applied immediately in the barn, storage or later), its effect along the life cycle of the effluent can be variable, sometimes leading to pollution swapping between different stages of the nutrient cycles. The aim of the project is to study, using an effluent life-cycle approach, the effect of treatment and management strategies applied to animal slurries on (1) the nutrient use efficiency of this manure at farm level by an intensive double-cropping forage system and (2) on the environmental impacts associated to N and C losses by gaseous emissions and nitrate leaching.
The specific objectives are to study the effect of slurry treatments (Acidification, mechanical separation, addition of urease inhibitors, microorganisms and nitrification inhibitors) on the following aspects: characteristics and properties of the effluents and fractions obtained; emissions of C and N gaseous compounds in the stables (scale-models) and during storage; fertilizer value of each slurry treatments under field conditions and, simultaneously, evaluate N losses by nitrate leaching and emission of gaseous compounds, and; soil microbial population.

We are seeking a candidate preferably with a background in Agronomy, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Chemistry or related fields.

PhD position - Software Defined Radio
http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/index.cfm/jobs/jobDetails/33768981
Description
This position is for a research assistantship in a computer science PhD program in DIVA, specifically with a focus on HCI, 3DUIs, scientific visualization, and computer graphics. With the continuing advances in simulation techniques and interactive visualization, increasingly large 3D data sets can be processed and interactively displayed for real-time visual exploration. In this context the emphasis of the position is in ensuring real-time performance in interactive 3D applications through adaptive and parallel methods well adapted to current and future hybrid hardware platforms. Currently targeted application domains include the aerospace industry, advanced display systems, bio-medical imaging, geo-visualization, urban planning, architectural modeling, material science, molecular visualization, and more. Besides technical aspects, we will also focus on innovation in perceptual- and cognitive-motivated methods. That is, we will study how to best harness human capability by efficiently embedding users into the loop of data-intensive visualization systems. Concretely, that means how to best integrate 3D visualization into complex information spaces, leading to fully functional digital mockups.
On the part of the applicant, this requires interest not only in HCI, 3DUIs, infovis, and computer graphics, but also in the task and data complexity of the targeted application. Readiness to collaborate with domain scientists and other institutions is key. Furthermore, a strong interest and good skills in learning new programming frameworks, 3rd-party code, and applied mathematics is necessary, as the targeted research project builds on other previously developed techniques. The activities of the position include not only research and continuing education for PhD students, but also support in teaching as well as in administrative tasks. The main goal is to conduct excellent research, generating results that are published and presented in top international journals and conferences, and to work towards eventually achieving a PhD degree through the writing and defense of a doctoral dissertation.

Description
Requirements of Candidates (IMPORTANT)
- THE CANDIDATE SHOULD HAVE OBTAINED THE BSc DEGREE FROM A NON-SPANISH UNIVERSITY, AFTER JANUARY 1st, 2010 (constraints imposed by the Grisolia Program).
- BSc or MSc degree* in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent.
- Good level in both spoken and written English.
* If the candidate holds already a MSc Degree, it is possible to apply directly for the UVEG Ph.D. Program. Otherwise it is possible to apply for the Advanced Sciences of Modern Telecommunications offered at the Universitat de Valencia in collaboration with Universitat Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona. For more information please check this link: http://www.uv.es/mscasmt/

Project Description
The candidate will integrate in a dynamic and transnational team (GSIC research group) of international researchers participating in both national and European research projects. The candidate will collaborate on several developments:
- Software Radio Testbed: the candidate will explore the possibilities of the USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral) platform to design and implement a software radio system (implementation of LTE-like systems, development and validation of spectrum sensing algorithms for different technologies, resource allocation schemes, etc…). This will include also the design of software architectures and controllers to ease the testing of new algorithms.
- Wireless Sensor Network Testbed: the candidate will also develop solutions for different types of motes, which will involve programming in several operating systems (TinyOS, Contiki), implementing various algorithms and network protocols, as well as hardware design (integration of electronic components, sensors, energy harvesting and mote packaging).
