If a thin oil layer covers the air–water surface and many small, hydrophobic solid particles are present at the surfaces of the antifoam oil drops and are able to enter the air–water surface, they showed that capillary effects cause the oil layer at the surface to form an oil collar around the portion of the particle projecting outward from the drop (Fig. 2). If the equilibrium contact angle αSO between the oil–water interface and the solid surface (measured through the water) exceeds 90°, inspection of Fig. 2 reveals that as oil is drawn into the collar, the contact line at the bottom of the collar advances until it meets the contact line where the solid emerges from the oil drop. At this point the collar coalesces with the drop, allowing the drop to enter the air–water surface. On the other hand, if there is no oil layer on the air–water surface, the criterion for oil to enter the surface following entry by a solid particle is more restrictive [1]: A+B>180° with A the equilibrium contact angle (measured through the water) where an air–water interface meets the solid. Thus, when solid particles are present at the oil–water interface, an oil drop can enter the air–water surface in some cases in the presence of but not in the absence of an oil layer on the surface.
