Our group uses a novel chirped-pulse broadband microwave spectrometer to investigate the rotational spectra of biomolecules and their complexes in the gas phase. This PhD thesis is especially focused on monosaccharides and their recognition by aromatic molecules such as benzene, indole, or, as a challenging goal, by the biologically and highly important amino acid, tryptophan. These interactions are essential for many biological processes such as cell recognition by proteins. The determination of the geometric structures of these complexes and the associated intermolecular interactions are the aims of this thesis. Demanding physical methods and a good chemical understanding are needed to successfully accomplish these goals and locates the project at an exciting boundary between physics and chemistry with important implications for biological sciences.

The successful applicant will be trained on a recently built apparatus featuring modern equipment and techniques such as a chirped-pulse broadband microwave spectrometer, nanosecond UV and IR lasers, and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Experience in all aspects of modern molecular spectroscopy instrumentation will be gained during the course of this PhD project. This experience will include employing state-of-the-art experimental methods, challenging simulations, and the 'art' of interpreting spectra. A basic knowledge of the fundamentals of molecular spectroscopy and quantum chemistry are required.

> The attractive scientific environment of our Max-Planck Research Group at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science in Hamburg offers the possibility to gain contact with renowned scientists. The successful candidate will be employed via the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics according to the rules of the Max Planck Society for support of PhD students (either TVöD E13/2 or a Max Planck stipend). The position will run for three years. The successful candidate will also be connected to the Universität Hamburg via the International Max Planck Research School for Ultrafast Imaging and Structural Dynamics (UFAST).
