Both reactors were fed with synthetic medium at 10.6 L/d, giving a HRT of 1.13 day. Internal and sludge recycle rates were 21.2 and 10.6 L/d, respectively. In both HSBNRs, the aerobic tanks contained attached and suspended cells at 1500 and 2500 mg volatile suspended solid (VSS) per liter, respectively. For routine operation, all biomass loss was in the effluent. In addition, separate biomass wasting was practiced once per month to obtain the desired average SRT. SRT. The average SRT of all biomass in the HSBNR reactors, computed as V(Xa + Xs) divided by (QeXe+QwXw), was 31土7 days after day 60. Xa, Xs, Xe,and Xw were, respectively, the biomass (VSS) concentrations attached to the media, in suspension, suspended in the effluent, and in the waste biomass. Qe and Qw were the effluent flow rate and the time-averaged waste-flow rate, respectively. Attached biomass in the aerobic tank was 37.5% of the total biomass.
