Two main causes of gel cracking have been identified: (1) Evaporation of solvents during the drying step, which occurs specifically on the outer surface of the capillary network, since the solid material at the drying front is exposed to ambient atmosphere. Shrinking results from stress caused by the existence of a meniscus at the liquid–vapour interface, which generates a differential capillary pressure within the gel as the solvent tends to evaporate [10]. (2) The syneresis which takes place as the gel ages. This consists in the continuous rearrangement of particles through further condensation reactions with the associated loss of structural solvents (i.e., water and ethanol). This process leads to a better packing of the gel body and also to the undesirable process of fracturing. |
