The Paul Scherrer Institute is with 1400 employees the largest research centre for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland and a worldwide leading user laboratory. Its research activities are concentrated on the main topics structure of matter, energy and environmental research as well as human health. The Electrochemistry Laboratory is part of the General Energy Research Department. It is dedicated to modern aspects of electrochemical energy conversion and storage, es-pecially in conjunction with sustainable mobility. In the electrochemical conversion sec-tion, we are working on novel advanced electrocatalyst systems for low temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers. We are looking for a PhD Student in Electrochemistry Renewable Fuel Generation by Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Your tasks Preparation and experimental characterization of novel electrocatalysts for electro-chemical CO2 reduction; single crystals and size and shape controlled nanoparticles Utilization of electrochemical and in-situ spectroscopic characterization methods to understand (surface-)structure-reactivity relationships and to determine the reaction kinetics Energetic feasibility analysis of the electrochemical CO2 reduction process Discussion of the results with industrial and academic partners and publication in journals and at conferences Your profile Master degree or equivalent in physical chemistry, technical chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or physics Good knowledge of electrochemistry, physical chemistry; synthesis skills are benficial Have an active interest in experimental work and take the initiative for new solutions; being able to work independently in our research team The experimental work will be at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, the PhD degree will be from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich).
