The H 2 L 4- ligand displays two very similar binding modes, either h 3 :h 3 :h 2 :h 2 :h 1 :h 1 :m 4 or h 3 :h 2 :h 2 :h 1 :h 1 :h 1 :m 3 (Fig. 4). In the first mode, both m 3 -CH 2 O - arms (O13, O16) bridge the central Co(II) to one outer Co(II) and one Co(III) ion. Two of the remaining arms (O14, O17) bridge an outer Co(II) to a Co(III) centre. The second binding mode has one m 3 -CH 2 O - arm (O21). Two of the remaining arms (O20, O22) are m-bridging an outer Co(II) to a Co(III) centre, while the final binding CH 2 O - arm (O23) is monodentate. In both binding modes, each ligand amine group is monodentate and bound to a Co(III) centre. The two remaining CH 2 OH arms of each H 2 L 4- ligand are unbound. The pentanuclear cluster is a monocation, with charge balance afforded by a [Co II (acac) 3 ] - anion. The arrangement of the cobalt centres in the { Co II3 Co III2 } core is effectively a smaller fragment of the larger { M 7 } disc SMM [Co II4 Co III3 (HL 2 ) 6 (NO 3 ) 3 (H 2 O) 3 ] 2+ { H 3 L 2 = H 2 NC(CH 2 OH) 3 } . Surprisingly, 2 is the first example of a complex that contains a fragment of the larger { M 7 } discs. |
