“Panarchy” is the term we use to describe a concept
that explains the evolving nature of complex
adaptive systems. Panarchy is the hierarchical
structure in which systems of nature (for example,
forests, grasslands, lakes, rivers, and seas), and humans
(for example, structures of governance, settlements,
and cultures), as well as combined human–
nature systems (for example, agencies that
control natural resource use) and social-ecological systems (for instance,
co-evolved systems of management), are interlinked in never-ending
adaptive cycles of growth, accumulation, restructuring,
and renewal. These transformational cycles
take place in nested sets at scales ranging from a leaf
to the biosphere over periods from days to geologic
epochs, and from the scales of a family to a sociopolitical
region over periods from years to centuries.
If we can understand these cycles and their scales, it
seems possible to evaluate their contribution to sustainability
and to identify the points at which a
system is capable of accepting positive change and
the points where it is vulnerable. It then becomes
possible to use those leverage points to foster resilience
and sustainability within a system.
The idea of panarchy combines the concept of
space/time hierarchies with a concept of adaptive
cycles. I will deal with each in turn and then show
the consequence of combining them in a synthesis.

我们常说的“Panarchy”这一概念解释了自然进步啊的复杂的适应系统。
Panarchy实际上是一个等级结构,该等级结构包括自然界系统(如森林,草地,湖泊,河流和大海),人类(如统治结构,财产定居和文化等)以及人类和自然的联合(如控制自然资源利用的行为)和社会生态学系统(即系统和管理的共同进化),他们之间相互交织,并在不断的适应循环中发展,积累,重组,更新,永不停止。
这些转化循环以嵌套集合的方式产生,产生的规模程度多样,从一片叶子到几个世纪生物圈,从几天的时间到整个地质时期,从一个家庭到几个世纪之久的社会政治领域。
如果我们能够理解这些循环和这些规模,就有可能评估他们在持续性中所起的作用并能发现系统能够接受其积极改变和易受攻击的关键点。
随后在系统内部,利用这些具有调节作用的关键点培养适应力和持续性成为可能。在适应性循环中,panarchy的想法结合了了空间/时间等层次结构的概念。我将依次论述上述内容,并在一个整体内表明其因果关系
