AstraZeneca to Build $200 Million Manufacturing Plant in China Medical City AstraZeneca, the world's 7th-largest biopharmaceutical company by revenue, has announced plans to build a new US$200 million manufacturing plant in Jiangsu, China. The new plant, to be built in Taizhou's China Medical City (CMC), will be the company's largest-ever investment in a single manufacturing facility globally. Construction of the plant is scheduled to be completed by end-2013. According to the company, the plant will manufacture both intravenous and oral solid medicines for AstraZeneca's growing business in China. AstraZeneca already has a 96,000 square metre pharmaceutical manufacturing site in Wuxi, Jiangsu which currently produces 4 billion tablets per year and is being expanded to produce 7-8 billion tablets by 2015. A new injection solution plant capable of producing 30 million vials is also under construction at the Wuxi site and is expected to be completed by 2012. The company also has an Innovation Centre China (ICC) in Pudong, Shanghai. The ICC, which houses 70 researchers, is a translational research centre with an initial focus on cancer through the development of knowledge about Chinese patients, biomarkers and genetics. According to AstraZeneca, the ICC is one of the company's most advanced research centres outside the UK, Sweden and the US. - globalFDI |
