Flexible Circuit Technology
THIRD EDITION
by
Joseph Fjelstad

Th is is the Th ird Edition of Flexible Circuit Technology—an updated
and signifi cant expansion over the previous editions. Achieving thirdedition
status based on demand extends credence that fl exible circuits are
of continuing value and enduring interest. Recalled here is the opening
sentence to the very fi rst edition: “Th e fl exible circuit has been at the head
of a quiet revolution in the world of electronic packaging, a revolution that
has gone largely unnoticed, lost in the excitement of continued advances
in semiconductor technology.” Much has changed in the decade since
those words were fi rst written for this book. Flexible circuit technology is
now squarely in the sights of circuit designers around the globe and, even
with the bursting of the dot com bubble, it has held fast and, in fact, the
fl ex circuit market actually grew while other interconnection-technology
markets receded.
Flexible circuits are now a key enabling technology for products ranging
from simple consumer goods to spacecraft . Th ey are critical elements in
such diverse products as medical equipment, keyboards, hard disk drives,
printers and cellular phones. Every day, fl exible circuit technology opens
doors to new opportunities for engineers and product and system designers
to make a complete transition to the third dimension of interconnection.
Short of wireless interconnections, fl exible circuits also continue to provide
the very best and most practical solutions to interconnecting electronic
elements that must move relative to each other. Th ese two important
features — motion and three-dimensional interconnection — remain at
the top of the list of key attributes of fl exible circuits; however, there is
much more on the horizon and more yet to come in the years beyond, with
fl exible circuit technology now opening new doors to the realm of high
speed in the budding era of higher performance at reduced power
While there is no universal solution in the world of electronic
interconnections, fl exible circuits come closer to being such than all
others. Th e diversity of fl ex circuit applications remains bound more by
the limits of the engineer’s imagination than by any other single factor.
Flexible circuit technology requires a good foundation of understanding
in order to gain the greatest benefi t from its use. Materials and processes
must be understood, and design rules followed, if success is to be enjoyed
consistently. Th us, the purpose of the authors, in this third edition of this
book on fl exible circuit technology, remains unchanged from the fi rst
edition—that is, to provide the reader with a solid foundation on which
the practitioner can build their skills and understanding.
Th is edition is signifi cantly expanded over earlier editions and takes
advantage of advances in technology to provide the user with much more
information than before. While more complete than earlier editions, this
eff ort still does not represent itself to be an exhaustive treatise of the subject.
Indeed, with a technology that moves as rapidly as fl ex, the best one can
hope to do is to write about the state of the technology up to the moment
of publication, aft er which time the text begins to drift into technology
history. Nevertheless, this book is believed to be properly comprehensive
and it is hoped that it provides an engaging introduction to the world of
fl exible circuitry.
As with previous editions, readers are advised to access the various
design standards and specifi cations described and referenced in this text to
complete their fl ex circuit reference library. In addition, many fl ex circuit
suppliers have design guides specifi c to their processing capabilities that
will oft en prove of value. Such additional materials will serve well to fi ll
whatever gaps readers may experience in this book. If you are new to fl exible
circuits, you will no doubt fi nd the fi eld a rewarding one. Finally, readers
are invited to send comments and suggestions as to how the book might be
improved, for the better to serve the needs of future edition readers.
