| To a cooled suspension of the hydroxy-9-xanthenone (0.01 mole) in glacial acetic acid (30 ml) was added the secondarv base (0.011 mole), followed by paraformaldehyde (0.011 mole). The reaction mixture was then heated under reflux for 4 hours and left overnight at room temperature. After the acetic acid was removed, in a vacuum, the residue was treated with dilute hydrochloric acid to dissolve the Mannich base formed. The reaction mixture was filtered and the cooled filtrate was made alkaline with ammonium hydroxide. The product was isolated either in the form of the solid free base or its hydrochloride . The hydrochloride was formed by saturating the dry ethereal solution of the base with dry hydrogen chloride gas. |
