| Park viewed the researcher as a form of a more accurate, responsible, and scientific reporter. Having his roots in newspaper reporting, Park stressed the variety and value of human experience. He believed that research would eventually point at natural, but fluid laws and generalizations in regard to human nature and society. This foundation for qualitative research is currently used as a definition of the qualitative inquiry. Constant change was the conclusion that Park sought to prove, as social environment is never static. That was not the only work that created qualitative methodology as known today. The new social science discipline draws from a number of other areas as well: the clinical methods of doctors; the casework technique being developed by social workers; the methods of historians and anthropologists, and the qualitative descriptions provided by quantitative researchers. Over the years, qualitative studies have drawn their share of doubt and criticism. The method had its detractors from the start. In the early 1920s, the debate between pro-qualitative and pro-quantitative research validity and methodology became heated. |
