In this article we compared laboratory simulation results of the thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) with geological observations. We concluded that the simulation results were consistent with the natural TSR process in terms of products, reaction temperature, catalysts, and so on. However, sulfur isotopic fractionation in H2S and carbon isotopic fractionation in alkanes obtained from the simulation significantly deviated from the observation. In addition, the simulation revealed little on the catalytic aspect of the TSR.
