It and its various incarnations sometimes come with sensational--and definitely exaggerated--prefaces such as "These 200 hundred sentences are the creme de la creme of foreign classic compositions", " These are perfect sentences", "These are distilled from hundreds of fine Ielts compositions", and so on. Is that true? The answer is a resounding "NO." This set is identifiable by the first sentence: 1. According to a recent survey, four million people die each year from diseases linked to smoking. (wordy: ÐÞ¸Ä (seeÊÔÐ޸ġ®Ó¢Óïд×÷¾ø¶ÔÓÐÓÃ200¾ä/Ó¢Óïд×÷±Ø±³200¾ä "(¿´Àý×ÓÒ»ÖÁÒ»°Ù Á¬½ÓÔÚ´Ë: http://www.rainlane.com/dispbbs.asp?boardid=11&id=19210) : A recent survey shows four million people died from smoking related diseases annually.) I am not the only person who notices the problem in these sentences. Here is another individual who is also sceptical, and decided to show it to people who should know. If you are still not convinced, all you have to do is to read through the list of sentences carefully and you will pick up some very obvious mistakes. E.g. In fact, it is unhealthy for them to spend all of time on their study. As an old saying goes: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. ÐÞ¸ÄΪ A proper part-time job would not occupy too much of a student¡¯s time. In fact, it is unhealthy for them to spend all their time on their studies. As an old saying goes: ¡°All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.¡± (Please note this same quote is repeated in #79) 26. The information I've collected over last few years leads me to believe that this knowledge may be less useful than most people think. ÐÞ¸ÄΪ(The information¡over the last few years¡less useful than what most people think.) 27. Now, it is generally accepted that no college or university can educate its students by the time they graduation. ¸ÄΪ(--> by the time they graduate.) 44. It is commonly (¸ÄΪ generally) accepted that no college or university can educate its students by the time they graduation (ÐÞ¸Ä graduate). (This is essentially the same as 27. My suspicion is that 27 and 44 are from the same partially corrected essay, with the second mistake missed.) 32. Although many people claim that, along with the rapidly economic development, the number of people who use bicycle are decreasing and bicycle is bound to die out. The information I've collected over the recent years leads me to believe that bicycle will continue to play extremely important roles in modern society. ÐÞ¸Ä: the rapidly economic development--> the rapid economic development; bicycle is bound to-->the bicycle is/bicycles are; that bicycle will continue--> the bicycle will/bicycles will. 76. It is hard to imagine a student focusing their energy on textbook while other children are playing. ÐÞ¸Ä: ( a student ¡his¡textbook)(students¡their¡textbooks) I don't think I need to say more. You can judge for yourself. Sure, if all you want is to pass an exam, go ahead and learn from them. If you really want to learn good English, stay away! ==================== For more, please read: ÊÔÐ޸ġ®Ó¢Óïд×÷¾ø¶ÔÓÐÓÃ200¾ä/Ó¢Óïд×÷±Ø±³200¾ä¡¯ Ò»ÖÁ 100¡± (Çë×ðÖرðÈ˵ÄÀͶ¯³É¹û, °ÝÍÐÇë×¢Ã÷תÌù£¬×¢Ã÷×÷Õß¼°³ö´¦) http://www.rainlane.com/dispbbs.asp?boardid=11&id=19210 |

People copy them from one another without checking, resulting in a proliferation of these misleading articles. The people who get hurt the most are the beginning learners since they are not in the position to distinguish good English from bad. I have made corrections to some of these articles.
