Measurement of Dispersion and Separation Resolution.
We determine the separation resolution by measuring the particle
position distribution in the expanded section. The measurements
are made from an ensemble average of 100 epifluorescent images
of particle streams undergoing separation. We average the image
intensities along the x-axis to obtain the particle intensity distributions
as a function of z. An exemplary particle intensity with a
bimodal Gaussian fit is shown in Figure 3. We obtain the
dispersion widths (s1,s2) and the particle stream centers (z1,z2) from
the Gaussian fit.
