PVA and HEC are water-soluble. We used 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride as etherifying agent to introduce quaternary ammonium groups into the structure of PVA and HEC through quaternization reaction to prouduce quaternized QPVA and QHEC, respectively. The effect of reaction conditions on the degree of substitution and reaction efficiency were studied.
