PhD Research Fellow in Organic Chemistry- (ref. no. 2011/6099) http://uio.easycruit.com/vacancy/554590/64291?iso=no Department of Chemistry PhD Research Fellow in Organic Chemistry- (ref. no. 2011/6099) A position as PhD Research Fellow is available at the Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo (http://www.kjemi.uio.no/), within the Synthesis and Molecular Structure research group. The fellowship is for a period of up to 3 years. Starting date no later than 15.08.2011. Job description The project is entitled "Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of 8-oxoguanine derivatives as potential inhibitors of DNA glycosylases - possible adjuvants in cancer treatment" and is financed by MLSUiO. The aim of the project is design and synthesis of novel inhibitors of human DNA glycosylases involved in the repair of oxidative damages in DNA. Such inhibitors may enhance the thera-peutic effect of cancer radiotherapy and chemotherapy since these two treatment protocols are based on challenging the DNA repair capacity of the cancer cells, partly by imposing high concentrations of DNA damage in the tumour cells. The candidate will focus on the synthesis of potential inhibitors and the project will be conducted in in close cooperation with Dr. Bjørn Dalhus and co-workers (Institute for Clinical Biochemistry & Institute for Medical Microbiology, National Hospital). Requirements Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry. The selected candidate should be motivated, talented, and curiosity driven individual with a strong background in organic chemistry, especially with organic synthesis and chromatographic and spectroscopic methods for separation and structure elucidation of organic compounds. Previous experience in heterocyclic chemistry and nucleside analog synthesis, may be emphasized, but is not a prerequisite. The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and admission approved within three months after the date of commencement.
