Biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine are at the heart of this growth potential and this structured PhD programme is designed to produce graduates who will be the next generation of leaders in the industry and in academic research and education in the field. This 4-year Structured PhD Programme in Biomedical Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, which will be delivered by a core partnership of institutions: National University of Ireland Galway (Administrative Coordinator), University of Limerick and University College Cork, linked with a wider consortium of partner institutions nationally and internationally, including: Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Sligo, University of Ulster, Queen's University Belfast, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, University of Pittsburgh, USA, Duke University, USA, Rice University, USA, Mayo Clinic, USA, RWTH Aachen University, Germany, Georgia Tech Ireland, and the Irish Medical Devices Association (IMDA). BMERM combines a PhD research project with a unique didactic and experiential learning programme, resulting in an unparalleled learning experience for the student in terms of its combination of world-class research and focused clinical and industrial engagement, the latter facilitated by the direct involvement of IMDA with is membership of over 100 medical technology companies in Ireland. At the core of the 4-year programme is the PhD research project, performed in collaboration with internationally renowned investigators, in one of the following five areas: Functional Biomaterials; Mechanics of Biological Cells, Tissues and Systems; Bioelectronics and Rehabilitation Engineering; Regenerative Orthobiologics and Neurotherapeutics; Regenerative Cardiovascular Therapeutics. The BMERM didactic and experiential learning programme involves the following elements: Student Placement, Annual Summer School, Medical Sciences and Clinical Attachment module, unique "BioInnovate" modules for medical technology innovation, design and entrepreneurship training, Generic Skills modules, and a range of advanced discipline-specific modules aligned with the five research areas. Applicants for funded fellowships of the programme should have a primary degree in a relevant area of engineering or science, at a minimum level of a H2.1 bachelors degree or equivalent. BMERM is funded under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions Cycle 5. 7, University of Glasgow - School of PsychologyThree-year PhD Studentship Dynamic Mental Representations of Motion Events in Sentence Processing Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on a psycholinguistic project concerned with the mental simulation of motion trajectories during language comprehension. The studentship is linked to the three-year ESRC research project "Dynamic Mental Representations of Motion Events in Sentence Processing" (see project summary below) awarded to Christoph Scheepers (Glasgow) and Yuki Kamide (Dundee). The studentship will be based in Glasgow and jointly supervised by the two investigators. Candidates should have a Masters degree in psychology or related area. The degree must be from an ESRC recognised masters course (please refer to the ESRC website for a list). Excellent computing skills (including knowledge in statistical data analysis) are essential and some background in Psychology of Language and/or Vision would be desirable. Candidates from within the EU are eligible if they hold the equivalent of an MSc degree and have been UK residents for at least three years (ESRC requirement). The envisaged starting date is 1st October 2011. The duration of the studentship is three years, and the successful candidate will receive an annual stipend (£13,590 in 2010/11). The present research will closely investigate how we construct such representations as the sentence unfolds. The project proposes a series of experiments that attempt to uncover potential ‘mental simulation' processes in understanding linguistically described motion events. Some experiments, for example, investigate whether listeners' attention shifts can be modulated by the shape of the trajectory of the object in motion (e.g., the ball will be thrown/rolled into the pond). To do so, various methods are used to track attention shifts: standard ‘visual-world' eye-movement tracking techniques to explore listeners' overt attention shifts, as well as other methods to capture more 'covert' attention shifts, focusing on the time-course of the processing to establish how automatic these processes are. Other experiments also aim at comparing the processes by which people represent motion events in spoken language versus written language. Altogether the research will have implications for wider issues, such as cognitive representation theories, cognitive development, and language-vision interactions. Date of input: Wednesday, 4 May 2011 Date of expiry: Friday, 17 June 2011 8, University of Cambridge - Department of EngineeringPhD Studentship in Robust Turbomachinery Design Optimisation Limit of tenure: 3 years Applications are invited for a funded PhD studentship in robust turbomachinery design optimisation. Computational methods for engineering design optimisation advance year-on-year in parallel with advances in computer hardware. Improvements in the fidelity and speed of evaluation tools and in the capabilities of optimisation/search algorithms are enabling high-fidelity analysis tools to be exploited earlier and to greater benefit in the design process. This project will integrate state-of-the-art methods for uncertainty quantification with high-fidelity simulation tools used for the aerothermal design of turbomachinery by Rolls-Royce and test the effectiveness of the resulting enhanced design capability on representative real-world applications. This studentship is funded by EPSRC and Rolls Royce plc as a Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award. An electrical engineer with knowledge of power electronics and grid connections is required to take up a PhD studentship on connection technology and energy storage for large offshore wind farms. The successful applicant will register for a PhD at University of Durham and would be expected to complete the doctorate during the four year period. The applicant will be registered at Durham University, but will be based primarily with the Energy Research Unit (ERU) at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. Duties and responsibilities The PhD student will work on wind farm connection studies, and specifically will be responsible for definition of the requirements for integration of energy storage, to enhance steady-state and dynamic performance of the integrated system. Key aspects of the research will involve investigation of requirements for energy storage, considering avoidance of turbine trips during network fault conditions, avoidance of curtailment during over-frequency events, and enhancement of frequency response and stability. The suitability and integration of a range of high power and high energy technologies will be investigated. Contacts and Communication The student will be supervised by Professor Peter Tavner in Durham and Dr Alan Ruddell at ERU. Prof Tavner is Professor of New & Renewable Energy in the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences at University of Durham, the Supergen Wind Energy Technologies project manager, and the Theme 3 leader, responsible for strategic direction of the project and for co-ordination of project activities. Dr Alan Ruddell is a Senior Research Engineer in the ERU at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The student will also form close working relationships with key researchers at the Universities of Durham, Strathclyde and Manchester, undertaking complementary activities in connection technology within Theme 3. Project Title: Capturing the early modern body: discourses of embodiment in Shakespearean performance Project Description: In recent years a new field has begun to emerge in Shakespeare studies, as scholars have attempted to discover how the theory and practice of theatrical gesture may have impacted upon the performance of his writing - as witnessed in the Globe Theatre Education Department's first gesture Lab in October 2010. However, while much of this scholarly work necessarily remains speculative, any attempt to make a conceptual map of Shakespearean ‘embodied writing' must eventually ask: how did the early modern actor move? This project seeks to address this question by engaging with a cultural history of early modern embodiment through experiments using motion capture technology. Drawing upon a range of visual and literary reference materials including art works, anatomical manuals, rhetorical treatises on gesture, and texts both by and about Shakespearean performance, the project seeks to uncover how early modern performance in England was marked by (and perhaps influenced) changing discourses of the body-in-motion.
