[交流] Choosing a Medical School已有5人参与

转载
I recently got to thinking about how I chose my medical school when I got news that the daughter of a mentor of mine had been accepted into several medical schools, all of them great, respected, et cetera. My mentor asked me if I had any advice on which one to choose.

errrrr....?!?!?!

So, assuming all the "important" things are equal (academics, reputation, et cetera) here are my recommendations (in no particular order):

1) Overall personality: is this a basic research school, focused on understanding the fundamental concepts of signal transduction? is this a clinical school, emphasizing skills and clinical trials? Is there a public health focus, domestic and/or global? Is there a commitment to social justice? The answers to these questions will give you an idea of the overall tone/theme of your medical school experience.

2) Patient population: this matters more for residency, but it still factors into you medical school experience. Are you going to deal with rural or urban populations? low-income, underserved populations? International patients? Tertiary care or primary care? These are the people you'll be learning from and taking care of for the next 4 years.

3) Classmates: Go to your revisit weekends! You need to get to know your classmates and find out if you feel like you can get along with them--you're going to be spending 4 years with these folks, so you better know you can at least work together.

4) Academics: I personally believe a curriculum is a curriculum is a curriculum. However, pass/fail is gold. Life is hard enough as is, best to remove a few layers of competition. I've found pass/fail curricula (from my experience and as reported by friends at other schools) really make the first 2 years a more collaborative experience--classmates share notes, share study tips and resources, et cetera.

5) Location, Location, Location: Are you close to family? Are you worried about long-distance relationships? Do you want to explore a new place? What can you NOT live without (eg cafes, public transit, an international airport to get away, et cetera)? WHERE your school is located does matter, so think about those environmental factors that you love or love to hate.
