You probably already know the answer to this question, but Thomas Alva Edison is credited with having created the light bulb. Thomas Edison was born in Ohio, grew up in Michigan, and moved to New Jersey where he created the light bulb. The town that he lived in during his inventing is now known as Edison, New Jersey. His idea and creation of the light bulb is used daily around the world. Thanks to his invention we have light in the darkness, and have been able to improve the invention he created around 1879. Thomas Edison is famous for many of his inventions, but the light bulb is arguably his greatest and most well known invention because of the improvements it made on life for people around the globe. Unlike many other inventors and scientists, Edison had very little education because he was required at home. His mom home schooled him, and he used the knowledge he learned from home and through books to help create the light bulb. Something you may not know about Edison is that he was partly deaf. This, however, did not affect his ability to create and invent. The light bulb, or electric light as Edison originally called it, was first tried out in 1879. He worked long and hard to test it out, and afterwards he worked to improve his invention. Edison tried using carbon filament with other elements to see which one would work best. He eventually settled on a type of bamboo that helped sustain energy for long periods of time. Edison worked to receive a patent for his invention, and was successful in 1880. Edison was excited to share his invention with the world. He set up an exhibition that would reveal his work and help to spread the news of his great invention. Edison hoped, above all, to make electricity affordable so that many people could benefit from his work. Even though many others claimed that they had come up with the idea for the light bulb first, Edison is still, undoubtedly, the most famous man tied to the invention. |
