Closing Date : 14 May 2011 Innovative automatic tooling for in-situ/on-wing repair of gas turbine engines The Studentship is available in the following research area: Innovative automatic tooling solutions for in-situ/on-wing repair of gas turbine engines. This project is in relation to the technical needs of Rolls-Royce to develop automatic and hybrid tooling solutions to enable in-situ/on-wing repair and maintenance of gas turbine engines; this could include self-oriented end-effectors with different functional capabilities that could support a wide range of in-situ operations. This is an exciting PhD project that has a unique combination of academic and industrial challenges which will enhance the student’s ability to tackle complex intellectual and practical aspects of mechatronics/mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Students must have first high-grade qualification, at least the equivalent of a UK first class honours degree, in mechatronics/mechanical engineering or in related disciplines from a prestigious academic institution; undergraduate students completing their studies in June/July 2010 with appropriate predictions of the academics results are eligible. They should have or be willing to rapidly develop in-depth knowledge in mechatronics/mechanical design, innovative actuation/visualisation systems, kinematic and/or dynamic analysis and simulation of complex mechatronics and finite element modelling. Students must be proficient in both written and spoken English, possess excellent presentation and communication skills and be capable to write reports (to sponsors) and academic papers. This studentship is available to Indian, Chinese or Malaysian citizens for a period of three years. The PhD scholarship will cover full university fees and a tax-free stipend (cca. £1100/month).
