Description of the hosting team:

The team Physical Dynamics of the Littoral (DPL), part of the joint research unit LIENSs CNRS/Universit¨¦ de La Rochelle, includes 6 permanent researchers, 3 of which are presently working on the hydro-sedimentary behavior of estuaries, morphodynamic modeling and storm surge modeling. Since the Xynthia major storm that hit La Rochelle region in February 2010, a part of DPL members
have initiated an integrated research project called ¡°Marine submersion¡±, dealing with storm surge modeling and the evaluation of the related inundation risk.

Job Summary
The DPL team is opening a 2-year position for a computational scientist to optimize the numerical part of the research project ¡°marine submersion¡± described above. The numerical modeling of coastal inundation implies simulating coastal circulation under the combined effects of tide, wind, wind-waves and atmospheric pressure gradients with a high resolution over a large geographical extend. This problem requires employing a computational grid with around 1000000 nodes, which
implies the use of well-parallelized codes with an optimized coupling procedure. More specifically, the selected candidate will have to: (1) verify that the circulation and wind-wave codes are wellparallelized and optimize their performance on La Rochelle University Cluster (392 cores); (2) optimize the coupling between the circulation and the wind-wave models, which presently relies on file writing/reading and (3) validate this optimized modeling system through the simulation of the
storm surge during Xynthia.

Required qualifications and skills
The selected candidate will hold a PhD degree (or possibly a MSc degree with several years of research experience) in applied mathematics, civil engineering, physical oceanography or related area. The main required qualification concerns scientific computing (Fortran programming, MPI parallel computing, I/O Optimization, etc.). Additional qualifications in maritime hydraulics and coastal
hydrodynamics will be appreciated.

Salary
Around 30000 €/yr, including health insurance.
