"These" or "They"? Grammar expert pls come in~
In my manuscript, my supervisor changed "they" into "these": In fact the phase compositions of laterite samples with both high and low nickel extractions are quite similar. TheyThese mainly contain goethite, quartz, and minor amounts of clay minerals. Is this correct? Thanks. [ Last edited by iangie on 2012-4-7 at 15:42 ] |

the word "these", as demonstrative pronoun, is more appropriate here while "they" are nominative, could also be used here, but seems not so natural connecting the last sentence.... and in my view, the former is more consistent with the habits may these could help you, and here I all use "these" |

Thank you all very much., I thought "these" is adjective only. But it can be used as demonstrative pronoun. Following example was found in "Collins Cobuild Advanced Learner's English Dictionary": [PRON] "These" is also a pronoun. AIDS kills mostly the young population of a nation. These are the people who contribute most to a country's economic development. |
