In this paper, a compact subwavelength array of planar monopoles, which is easy-to-design and convenient for integration on a printed circuit board, is proposed. In this array, each planar monopole is etched aperiodically with many microstructured complementary split rings (CSRs). Super-resolution focusing characteristics of the proposed array are tested with time reversal electromagnetic wave experiments. Data transmission experiments of a 2x2 TR-MIMO system with this proposed subwavelength array have been done, which shows the super-resolution focusing feasibility when two elements of the array are excited simultaneously. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% A traditional planar monopole is shown in Fig. 1(a). We propose a novel planar monopole etched aperiodically with many microstructured complementary split rings (CSRs), shown as in Fig. 1(b). Details of the CSR are shown in Fig. 1(c). The etched planar monopole is built on a 22mm 35mm 0.5mm substrate with a relative permittivity of . The radiation part, a metal loop etched aperiodically with CSRs, is placed on the front side of the substrate. The distance L1 between two CSR elements along y direction is 4.0mm, L2 and L3 along x direction are 4.4mm and 3.3mm, respectively. Radii r1, r2, r3, and r4 of the rings inside CSR are 0.4mm, 0.6mm, 0.8mm, and 1mm, respectively. The gap w1 of the split is 0.3mm. Feeder of the monopole is a microstrip line with an etched ground plate, where CSRs are etched periodically at an interval of 2.9mm along x direction and at an interval of 2.5mm along y direction. The input impedance of the feeding line is 50 ohms . %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% In Ref. [17], far field super-resolution characteristic of TR electromagnetic wave is generated by converting evanescent waves into propagating waves with the aid of randomly-distributed metal wires around each array element. Here, through the CSRs aperiodically etched on each planar monopole loop, near-field evanescent waves can be converted to propagating waves, which can be received, time-reversed by the TRM in the far-field, and then re-transmitted back. Based on [25] and [26], the evanescent waves and propagating waves are reciprocal, so the far-field time-reversed wave generated from the evanescent waves of the source is converted back into initial evanescent components, which therefore perform important roles for super-resolution refocusing. To verify this mechanism, experiments have been made as follows. |
