xx single crystals were grown by(through) the optical floating zone method. The as-grown samples were dark brown in color (with) a size of Ф 4-6 mm × L 87 mm and)the largest crystal domain of Ф 5 mm× L 32 mm. After being annealed, the color of the samples (直接用the samples地道点)faded to light brownish. (The powder X-ray diffraction analysis=X-ray powder diffraction analysis即XRD， showed that the crystals had a columbite-type MgNb2O6 structure. The crystal(s) grew along the c-axis direction and the cleavage plane could be indexed to b-axis direction. Transmission polarized-light microscopy measurements displayed that the crystal(s) (were) free of low angle grain boundaries and inclusions. （The）Raman scattering was also used to characterize the crystals and gave the change of x-O band annealed and non-annealed. The photoluminescence spectra exhibited a broad and strong blue emission band centered at 435 nm.
