Some nonmainstream areas of inquiry could be a special role in society since they can satisfy a part of human's curiosity sometimes. -------------------------------------------------------------------- With brilliant achivements of mainstream science, there are still uncultured areas which could be filled with such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits. Considering this point, some people would maintain that nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in society since they could satisfy human needs that are not researched by mainstream science by now. But as a considerable part of our life, nonmainstream areas could influence a little people but lose their might in facing to the whole world. To begin with, the role of nonmainstream areas of inquiry is based on the level of progress in mainstream science. Admittedly, such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astology, fortune-telling are popular in ancientry. The ancients found some nature phenomenons related with the movement of stars but they could not give a scientific explain. Astrology played a vital role for its reasonable explain about those phenomenons. However, with the heliocentric theory by Copernicus, the laws of planetary motion by Kepler, and then the law of gravity by Newton, astronomy gradually push the astrology to the edge of society. As results, mainstream sciences like astronomy play an important role in society for their great progress in most research fields. Obviously, we could not conclude simply that nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in modern society which its technology is being a high level. On the other hand, how to evaluate the role of nonmainstream areas of inquiry relied on whether it influence human beings positively or negatively. Although some nonmainsteam areas of inquiry could meet human needs in psychological level, lots of them would make people lose their positive aspiration, addict themselves to fantasy or other negative effections. Taking fortune-telling as an example, some people who believed it would daydream all day and all night but not took their efforts if it foretold their well future, in turn, they could be waiting to the bad fate since they convinced the curse by foreteller. However, lots of people who definitely doubt fortune-telling would consider it blank lies. How could we assert that such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as fortune-telling play a vital role in our mordern society while they gave people negative attitudes? However, we should take a glance that some nonmainstream areas of inquiry could be a special role in our society since they can satisfy a part of human's curiosity or other needs sometimes. Mainstream science keeps going on its progress, but there are always unknown fields in any time. People have a nature that they keep the stong curiosity on any unknown fields. So people would seek answers, which mainstream science cannot explain, in such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling or others. In this point of view, nonmainstream areas of inquiry could be a limited role sometimes because unknown areas is less and less with the progress of mainstream science. In sum, from what has been discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that nonmainstream areas of inquiry played a vital role in society which science was undeveloped, but lost their might gradually with magic progress of science in recent centuries. In other words, mainstream science built a solid status which it play a vital role in society today. |
