Abstract: A cylindrical stranded spring with helical wires (brief name as stranded spring) is made from several twisted wires with several tied steel. In this paper, a mathematical model and the corresponding 3D model of closed-end stranded springs are established according to the high requirements of the design and the complicated manufacturing process. As to current problems in the manufacturing process, a novel machine tool and a PC+PLC control method are proposed to overcome the drawbacks of conventional production methods and previous numerical control machines. The motions of the machine tool and the design validity of the closed-end stranded springs are verified by the simulation of 3D motion. It is proposed that the communication between the motion control system and the host computer could be realized by building a human-machine interface.
