Eawag is committed to the ecologically, economically and socially responsible management of water. Within the Department of Environmental Chemistry of Eawag and the European Union 7th framework Initial Training Network project ¡®Isotope forensics meets biogeochemistry ¨C linking sources and sinks of organic contaminants by compound specific isotope investigation¡¯ we are offering a position for a PhD Student in Environmental Organic Chemistry The subject of the PhD thesis will be the investigation of isotope effects pertinent to photochemical transformation of organic micropollutants in aquatic systems. Isotope effects obtained via compound-specific stable isotope analysis are powerful mechanistic probes for the identification of chemical and biological degradation pathways. The outcome of this project contributes to the improved assessment of micropollutant transformation in the environment and approaches for mitigating pollution of freshwater resources. The PhD student will be an active member of an international education and research network and will receive training in by some of the leading experts in the field. The successful candidate for this position is expected to hold an MSc degree in environmental chemistry/microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry or related disciplines. We seek motivated and creative candidates with a strong interest in laboratory work and in understanding chemical reaction mechanisms. Advanced knowledge of environmental and aquatic chemistry and/or photochemistry is beneficial. Fluency in English is required. The duration of the position will be three years, with a potential extension to four years. The PhD degree will be awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. The PhD student will be supervised by PD Dr Thomas B. Hofstetter, Dr Silvio Canonica, and Prof. Dr Kristopher McNeill. Salary will be in accordance with Marie Curie rules of the European Commission (http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/careers_en.htm). Besides a full employment contract, including social security, the candidate will receive mobility and yearly travel allowances, and career exploratory allowance. Applicants must also be in the first four years (date of MSc certificate or equivalent) of their research careers. Preferred start date is April 1, 2011. Workplaces are our laboratories at Eawag (Duebendorf), ETH (Zurich) including optional visits at our European partner institutions. Eawag is an equal opportunity employer. Women are explicitly encouraged to apply for increase their share in science and research. Please submit your application including CV, motivation letter, copies of academic qualifications and letters of support with the affiliations of the supporting scientists as one single PDF file to Sandra Isenring, Human Resources Department (recruiting@eawag.ch), citing reference number 106503. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2011 or until the position is filled. For further information, please consult www.eawag.ch or contact: PD Dr Thomas B.
