[交流] 【转载】大牛 E. J. COREY 鲜为人知的一面（手下博后自杀以及与HOFFMANN争锋）已有11人参与

很早以前就听闻COREY手下的博后自杀，只是没有太多的去关注。最近无意看到了维基上关于此事的一些报道，所以就拿出来，于大家讨论，大家客观的给出意见并且客观的分析一下。同时，还有当年他于HOFFMANN争锋的一些细节，大家看看。

Graduate student suicides
Between 1980 and 1998 there were eight graduate-student suicides at Harvard University, half of those were chemistry students, and three of those were suicides of students supervised by Prof. Corey.[28] Jason Altom's death caused controversy because he explicitly blamed Corey, his research advisor, for his suicide. Altom died by taking potassium cyanide in 1998, citing in his farewell note "abusive research supervisors" as one reason for taking his life. Altom's suicide note had been described as a "policy paper," because it contained explicit instructions on how to reform the relationship between students and their supervisors. [29]

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) cited the New York Times article on Altom's suicide as an example of problematic reporting, [30] and suggested that Corey was unfairly scapegoated. The AFSP review of the New York Times article states: "Readers are left with the feeling that the advisor's personal characteristics and the atmosphere he created are in fact responsible for Altom's suicide. Yet it seems more likely that Altom's own depression-driven perfectionism was most contributory to his suicide. And the protection Altom's suicide note indicated he needed was probably from inner demons, not from the professor on whom he projected them." [31]

再往后看，老头除了获得诺贝尔奖以外，还拿了个普利茨奖。这在美国也是个炸弹奖了，没想到老头领完奖以后不愿下台。而是高喊woodword的不是，说woodword-hoffmann规则是woodword抢了他的风头。当年他同woodword商量以后，woodword把他的idea发表了！也就是说今天的w-h规则本应该是Corey——Hoffman规则的！哈哈~老头千算万算没想到那个Hoffman还活着，Hoffman立刻在Angewandte Chemie.回文驳斥他！原文如下：
Woodward-Hoffmann rules
When awarded the Priestley Medal in 2004, E. J. Corey created a controversy with his claim to have inspired Robert Burns Woodward prior to the development of the Woodward-Hoffmann rules. Corey wrote:

“On May 4, 1964, I suggested to my colleague R. B. Woodward a simple explanation involving the symmetry of the perturbed (HOMO) molecular orbitals for the stereoselective cyclobutene → 1,3-butadiene and 1,3,5-hexatriene → cyclohexadiene conversions that provided the basis for the further development of these ideas into what became known as the Woodward-Hoffmann rules.” [33]

This was Corey's first public statement on his claim that starting on May 5, 1964 Woodward put forth Corey’s explanation as his own thought with no mention of Corey and the conversation of May 4. Corey had discussed his claim privately with Hoffmann and close colleagues since 1964. Corey mentions that he made the Priestley statement “so the historical record would be correct". [34]

Corey's claim and contribution were publicly rebutted by Roald Hoffmann in the journal Angewandte Chemie. In the rebuttal, Hoffmann states that he asked Corey over the course of their long discussion of the matter why Corey did not make the issue public. Corey responded that he thought such a public disagreement would hurt Harvard and that he would not “consider doing anything against Harvard, to which I was and am so devoted.” Corey also hoped that Woodward himself would correct the historical record “as he grew older, more considerate, and more sensitive to his own conscience.” [35] Woodward died suddenly of a heart attack in his sleep in 1979.
