PhD student position in powder diffraction/electron microscopy methodology A PhD position, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, is available in the powder diffraction/zeolite crystallography research group. (http://www.crystal.mat.ethz.ch/r ... sPowderDiffraction) The project is part of a larger one devoted to the development of methodology for the structure analysis of polycrystalline materials. Interest in the elucidation of the structures of novel zeolitic materials, in particular, provides the impetus for this work. However, the project is not restricted to zeolites. It also encompasses crystalline nanomaterials in general and may even expand to include the investigation of "real" materials with defect structures. The goal is to extend the present limits of structure solution for such materials by combining the complementary techniques of powder diffraction and electron microscopy. In addition to method development, the project will entail data collection at synchrotron radiation facilities (ESRF and SLS), and collaborations with the electron microscopy center at ETH (EMEZ), an electron microscopy group in Stockholm and synthesis laboratories in several different countries. Applicants will be expected to take a lively interest in the materials and the crystallography and to have some computer science background. While experience in electron microscopy is not mandatory, it would be helpful.
