Aggregate Separation
Field moist soil was passed through an 8-mm sieve by gently breaking apart the soil and air dried. Two pretreatments were applied before wet sieving: air-dried soil was rapidly immersed in water (slaked) and air-dried soil was capillary rewetted to field capacity plus 5% (kg/kg) and equilibrated at 4℃ overnight before immersion in water (rewetted treatment). Slaking disrupts the aggregates due to a build-up of air pressure upon rapidly wetting. In contrast, when the soil is capillary rewetted before sieving, the air has time to escape and consequently there is not a build-up of air pressure and more aggregates stay intact. In addition, the surface tension of water increases the cohesion between soil particles resulting in a higher aggregate yield upon rewetting. The soils were wet-sieved through a series of three sieves. The method used for aggregate size separation was adapted from Elliott. Briefly, a 100-g subsample (air dried or capillary wetted) was submerged for 5 min on top of the 2000 μm sieve prior to sieving. Aggregates were separated by manually moving the sieve 3 cm up and down with 50 repetitions during a period of 2 min. The >2000 μm aggregates were collected and sieving was repeated for the fraction<2000 μm with the next smaller sized sieve. This procedure was repeated for every sieve size. All aggregate fractions were oven dried (50℃) and weighed. Sand size distribution (>2000 μm; 250–2000 μm; 53–250 μm) of rewetted and slaked aggregates was determined by sieving after dispersing the aggregates with sodium hexametaphosphate (5 g L-1).

集合分离
田里湿润的土壤轻轻打碎过8毫米的筛后自然干燥。湿土过筛前先做两步预处理:1.将风干土壤迅速浸入水中(崩解或者崩溶);2.在浸入水前(潮湿重处理)将风干土壤用毛细管充入5%(公斤/公斤)的水做重湿润并在4℃ 下平衡过夜。如此处理是因为快速润湿形成空气压力崩溶破坏粘合体(团块)。相反,在过筛前用毛细管做重湿润,土壤中的空气就有足够的时间逸出,因而在土壤团块中没有形成空气压力而使土壤团块不受崩解溶化。此外,重湿润会使水的表面张力增加土壤间的粘合力而形成更多的土壤团块。土壤湿过筛经三个系列的筛网。
